A good discovery call script for a fitness coach has four parts: understand the lead's goal and history, find the real reason they want to change now, show them a clear plan, then ask for the decision. It takes about 20 minutes. The coaches who convert best prepare for five minutes before dialling, so the call starts from what the lead already told them.
Below is the full system: the prep sheet, the script word for word, answers to the five objections you will hear most, and how to follow up.
Before the call: the 5-minute prep sheet
Most coaches lose the sale before they dial, by walking in cold and asking questions the lead already answered on the form. Spend five minutes on this sheet instead.
| Question | Where to find it |
|---|---|
| What is their main goal, in their words? | Lead form answers |
| What have they tried before, and why did it stop working? | Lead form or DMs |
| What is their timeline or deadline? | Lead form ("when do you want to start?") |
| Any injuries, conditions or medications to ask about? | Lead form health questions |
| What might stop them from buying? (price, time, past failure) | Your read of the answers |
| What is the one outcome you will promise to focus on? | Your decision |
In BrixFit, Lead Intel does this prep for you: AI reads what the lead submitted and briefs you on what matters to them and what might hold them back, before you dial. You get 5 Lead Intel briefs a month free, and more on paid plans. You can also share an AI health report on the call, a personalised report on their body, energy needs and a next-30-days direction, as free value that shows your expertise. It is guidance, not a medical diagnosis.
The 20-minute discovery call script
Minutes 0 to 2: Open and set the agenda
Hi Priya, thanks for making the time. I read through your form, so I already know a bit about your goal. Here is how I usually run these: I will ask a few questions to really understand where you are, then if I think I can help, I will show you exactly how I would coach you. If it is not a fit, I will tell you honestly. Sound good?
Setting the agenda tells the lead you are in control and that there will be a clear ending. It lowers their guard.
Minutes 2 to 8: Understand the goal
You mentioned you want to lose around 8 kg before your sister's wedding in March. Tell me a bit more: what does that look like for you?
Follow up with:
- "What have you tried before?"
- "What worked, even for a while? What made it stop?"
- "What does a normal weekday look like for you, from waking up to bed?"
Listen more than you talk. Write down their exact words; you will use them later.
Minutes 8 to 12: Find the real reason
Why is this important to you now, rather than six months ago?
Then go one level deeper:
And if we get you there, what changes for you?
The first answer is usually the surface goal ("lose weight"). The second is the real reason ("I want to feel confident in photos", "my doctor warned me about my sugar levels"). People buy the real reason.
Minutes 12 to 17: Show the plan
Now describe how you would coach them, using their words:
Here is what I would do for you. We start with a nutrition plan built around the food you actually eat at home, with swaps so you are not eating differently from your family. Three workouts a week that fit your 6:30 am slot. A check-in every Sunday where I look at your weight, energy and adherence and adjust the plan. And you will see your progress in the app: your weight trend, your measurements, and before and after photos side by side.
Keep it concrete: days, times, what they will see. Vague plans ("we will work on your nutrition") do not sell.
Minutes 17 to 20: Ask for the decision
Based on everything you told me, I am confident I can help you get there. The programme is 12 weeks and it is [your price]. Would you like to start?
Then stop talking. Silence is part of the script.
If you have not set your price yet, our guide on how to price personal training and the pricing calculator will get you to a number you can say with confidence.
Handling the 5 most common objections
"It is too expensive"
I understand. Can I ask, too expensive compared to what? ... What would it be worth to you to actually be at your goal by March, instead of starting again in April?
Price objections are usually value objections. Bring it back to their real reason.
"I need to think about it"
Of course. Usually when someone says that, there is one specific thing they are unsure about. What is it for you?
Answer that one thing. If they still need time, book the follow-up on the call: "Shall I message you on Thursday evening?"
"I need to ask my husband / wife / parents"
That makes sense. What do you think they will ask? Let us make sure you have the answers.
Offer to send a short summary they can share.
"I have tried everything and nothing works"
That is exactly why the check-ins matter. Every Sunday we look at what happened and adjust. You will not be following a PDF alone.
"I will start next month"
Totally fine. What will be different next month? ... If we start now, you get four extra weeks towards March.
If they still want to wait, move them to a "Not now" stage with a follow-up date, not into your memory.
After the call: the follow-up
Every call ends with one of three outcomes, and each has a next step.
- Yes: send payment details and the onboarding form within the hour. Use our client onboarding template for the first week.
- Not now: set a follow-up date on the lead before you close it, and follow our lead follow-up system.
- No: thank them, ask what made them decide, and move them to a closed stage. Their answer improves your next call.
Run the whole sales system in one place
The script works on paper. It works better when the lead form, the pre-call brief, the pipeline and the follow-up reminder live together. BrixFit is coaching software and a CRM in one: your lead form feeds your pipeline, Lead Intel briefs you before the call, and when the lead says yes you convert them into a client and deliver their plan in the same system.
For a limited time, the BrixFit lead CRM is free with unlimited leads. Start free and run your next discovery call from a brief instead of a blank page.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a fitness discovery call be?
About 20 minutes. Two minutes to open and set the agenda, six to understand the goal, four to find the real reason, five to present the plan and three to ask for the decision. Longer calls tend to drift into free coaching.
What questions should I ask on a fitness consultation call?
Ask about their goal in their own words, what they have tried before and why it stopped working, their daily routine, any injuries or conditions, their timeline, and why the goal matters now. The "why now" answer is what they actually buy.
How do I prepare for a discovery call?
Read the lead's form answers and note their goal, history, timeline, health flags and likely objections. In BrixFit, Lead Intel reads the form for you and briefs you on what matters to the lead before you dial.
How do I handle "I need to think about it"?
Ask what specific thing they are unsure about, and answer that. If they still need time, agree the follow-up on the call, such as a message on Thursday evening, and set it as a reminder so it actually happens.
Should I give free advice on a sales call?
Give a little genuine value, like a personalised insight about their energy needs or one change to make this week, then show the full plan. Coaching the whole problem on the call removes the reason to buy.
